What are OTCs?

OTC (over-the-counter) drugs are products that when taken properly, may reduce symptoms and aid in recovery from common ailments such as the common cold, headaches, body pains, the flu, high fever, seasonal allergies, eye irritation, insomnia, cough, sore throat, toothache, etc.

According to the Federal U.S. Food and Drug Administration, OTCs are drugs that have been found to be safe for use without the supervision of a health care professional, and they can usually be purchased by consumers without a prescription at pharmacies and many convenience stores. These drugs are sometimes approved under applications like new prescription drugs, but more often they are legally marketed without an application by following a system put in place by the FDA called an OTC drug monograph.

Doctors commonly recommend certain OTC help treat pain and discomfort. OTC drugs must always be responsibly ingested and users must follow the directions on the label. Misuse of OTC drugs can result in dangerous side effects and even death.
